In 2007, fewer than 450 greater adjutant storks were left in Assam. Dr. Purnima Devi Barman led a conservation effort, enlisting 10,000 rural women in the ‘Hargila Army’ to protect the storks. By 2023, the population surged to over 1,800, earning Barman the 2024 Whitley Gold Award.
