India imported approximately 18.6 lakh tonnes of urea valued at $730 million from China in 2023-24, along with 22.6 lakh tonnes of phosphatic and potassic fertilisers. MoS Anupriya Patel informed Rajya Sabha that India relies on imports to bridge the gap between production and demand. Efforts are underway to attain self-sufficiency through the revival of several fertiliser units.
