On October 8th, 2024, Italian Minister Matteo Piantedosi ordered the deportation of Bologna-based imam Zulfiqar Khan, citing his growing radicalism, anti-Western and antisemitic rhetoric, and support for Hamas. Khan had been in Italy since 1995, but his residence permit was revoked. Authorities linked him to Islamist extremists and accused him of promoting hate speech, homophobia, and violence against non-Muslims. The move signalled Italy’s firm stance against terrorism and extremism, especially following the October 7th massacre. Khan’s deportation coincided with US sanctions on another Italy-based imam, Mohammad Hannoun, for his Hamas ties.
